Does CBD Make You High?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabid. Cannabids are naturally found in both cannabis and hemp. For years hemp got a bad reputation due to its rowdy relative, but it is mainly used to make rope and paper. Does CBD make you high?
According to Harvard Health, “CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. While CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself it does not cause a “high.” According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Why CBD Does Not Get You High
According to Healthline.com, CBD is “one of hundreds of compounds in (cannabids), but it’s received more attention lately as changes to state and federal laws have led to a rise in the production of CBD-infused products.” Just because a compound is found in one plant, does not mean it causes the effects associated with it.
What does cause intoxication in cannabids?
Healthline continues, “Another well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This compound is known for its psychoactive effects when consumed with cannabis, or marijuana. THC produces what many consider a “high,” or an altered state characterized by euphoria, pleasure, or heightened sensory perception. CBD doesn’t cause a high like THC.”
In short, CBD is not THC so it does not intoxicate you. Also, according to the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential.” It does, however, provide other benefits you may enjoy.
Health Benefits of CBD
Most report that CBD helps them relax. For this reason, it can help to curb anxiety and even depression. It can also help with nausea, insomnia, and seizures seen in Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and possibly MS.
If you don’t live in a state where cannabis sales are legal, or if you just don’t enjoy the feeling you get from cannabis, you might want to try CBD. Before you do, make sure to check with your health care professional first.
Why Some Think CBD Can Intoxicate You
The first reason some might think CBD has intoxicating potential is because CBD is found in cannabis plants. As already stated, however, it is not the compound which gives altered states of consciousness. Another big reason some may report feeling intoxicated from CBD is because it helps them relax. They may simply refer to any altered state as an intoxicant, which is a problematic definition. You don’t get intoxicated from a sad movie, but your emotional state might become altered.
It is also important to consider your dosage when taking CBD. High dosages can make one feel strange or even cause some annoying side effects.
Side Effects
According to Healthline.com, side effects include diarrhea, mild nausea, dizziness, excessive fatigue, and dry mouth. Usually these side effects will not occur unless you have taken too much CBD, so make sure to monitor your dosage.
Start small and build your way up to receive the desired results. If you keep encountering these side effects, however, CBD may not be for you.
Legality
United States federal law still prohibits the sale and possession of cannabis plants. However, CBD is also found in hemp and hemp was legalized in 2018. This means that CBD derived from hemp is legal in the United States unless your state has decreed otherwise.
CBD To THC Ratios
CBD to THC ratios vary, but CBD products are not allowed to have any more than 0.3% THC. If you are particularly sensitive or you want that little kick, make sure to ask about the CBD to THC ratio in your products.
